  • As a nationally recognized model in higher education on the issue of diversity, the University of Maryland (UM) seeks to share its success with other colleges and universities in their quest to diversify their campuses.

Building on their collaborative Ford Foundation funded Diversity Blueprint project with the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U), UM is now hosting professionals in a five-day Institute.

The Institute will enable professionals to obtain practical “nuts and bolts” strategies to build and implement a campus-wide diversity agenda on their campuses.

The 5-day IMPLEMENTATION AND INSTITUTIONALIZATION Institute will include two "HOT TOPICS" special segments. The first focuses on campus climate, in particular, building a comprehensive Hate Crimes/Bias Incidents Response Protocol and Prevention Plan. The second offers re-examination of the use of race in admissions one yar after the landmark Supreme Court ruling on Affirmative Action. Invited experts will discuss the Brown v Board of Education case, the Bakke case, the UM Banneker Scholarship case, the and the use of the combination of cognitive and non-cognitive variables in assessing student preparedness for admission to higher education with an eye to building diverse learning campus communities.

Participants will also have a chance to share the successes of model diversity programs on their campuses at the Best Practices Forum. The Forum will also give I3 participants the opportunity to explore Best Practices based on their institution size, type, and geographic location.

Participants in I3 will be invited to bring data describing their institution's demographics, governance structures, and organizational schemas. Through facilitated analysis of this data, I3 will enable participants to take home a plan of local action for the institutionalization of diversity in all aspects of campus life.

I3 will also enable participants to link to a collaborative network of higher education professionals across the country.
