FY '95 - FY '99 Program Budget Request

Program Mission

The purpose of the UMCP Diversity Initiative is to explore and enhance common values that emphasize interdepencence, ecuality, justice, human rights, and the sanctity of each individual's dignity. The goal is to further a unified vision and recognition of the principle of "unity and diversity", and of the fact that we all are fellow-citizens of an emerging global village.

The mission of the College Park Diversity Initiative is to build a more inclusive community grounded in respect for differences based on age, race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, political affiliation, and national origin. To accomplish this mission, the College Park Diversity Initiative will encourage and facilitate shared campus and unit responsibility to create a more sensitive and welcoming campus environment through programs and on-going projects. In addition, the UMCP Diversity Initiative will coordinate efforts to increase the visibility and coherence of campus diversity activities. The Diversity Initiative will be guided by an Advisory Board and implemented by a Steering Committee. The Diversity Initiative will serve as a rescurce for the campus community on diversity issues.

FY '94 Program Review

Program Goals:

  • To create a more visible, coherent ongoing initiative that includes a variety of campus diversity programs
  • To generate maximum participation and support from campus departments and organizations
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the Diversity Initiative activity

Activities:

  • Sponsored educational programs such as political correctness, females bridging cultures, anti-violence, and assisted in the development of unit diversity plans
  • Facilitated unit diversity programming by administering the "Diversity Matching Funds Grants" program
  • Coordinated Diversity Focus Days which consisted of 24 activities including 3 conferences, a student-led anti- prejudice campaign, and a "Campus Diversity Celebration"
  • Conducted a significant awareness raising campaign. which included the development and campus-wide distribution of 3 different diversity-related posters, the publication of 25 weekly articles in the "Outlook" which focused on campus unit diversity programming, and the production and distribution of buttons, bookmarks, and other materials bearing the Diversity Year Initiative logo. The campus post office meter imprinted the Diversity Year Initiative logo on all outgoing mail.
  • Conducted a survey to measure progress toward goals
  • Developed proposed methodologies to assess campus climate and measure the degree to which diversity is institutionalized into campus life

Progress Toward Goals

  • Achieved near 100% awareness of the University of Maryland at College Park's Diversity Year Initiative among campus unit heads (determined from result from the unit head survey)
  • Attained near 100% unit participation in sponsoring a diversity related activity

FY '95 Program Proposal

Background

The Office of Institutional Studies has submitted the evaluation survey results of the campus-wide diversity steering committee's activities for fiscal year l993-94. Sixty-five percent of attendees at co-sponsored programs indicated greater awareness of diversity issues as a result of attending that diversity program. Ninety-six percent found the program extremely to somewhat effective, and 95% would recommend the program to a friend. Ninety-one percent of the Program Sponsors and Matching Grant Recipients would be willing to co-sponsor another program. Some of the responses that were expressed by the campus unit heads were as follows:

Approximately 85% of the respondents support campus-wide diversity programs that were scheduled throughout, the year;

The estimated attendance at campus diversity events was from a unit's faculty (34%), staff (35%), and student (43%) constituencies;

The respondents expressed a beneficial effect from these diversity programs on faculty (39%), staff (55%), and students (34%)

In response to these and other comments frcm the survey respondents, the campus-wide diversity steering committee has developed the following program goals for the fiscal period 1995-99.

Program Goals:

  • To increase the attendance and diversity issue awareness of staff, faculty, and students above the 1993-94 level by 1999 by 20%.
    Proposed 1994-1995 Activies include:
    • an electronic Diversity List Serve
    • a "Diversity in Higher Education" teleconference
    • educational materials
    • a "Faculty Diversity Research Forum"
    • well known speakers such as Spike Lee or Jimmy Carter
    • an Aging Issues Resource Fair and Research Forum
    • and a workshop on "Resolving Conflicts Caused by Differences"
  • To enhance the beneficial effect of diversity programs and programming to the campus community, especially for classified staff and students.
    Proposed activities include:
    • a "Spring Diversity Focus and International Food Festival
    • a Diverslty Award Ceremony
    • Cross-Cultural Communication and Sensitivity Training Workshops for Classified employees
    • showcasing of diversity efforts of campus units and organizations in the Outlook
    • articles in student newspapers
    • a "Season of Lights--An All Cultures Winter Holiday Musical and Poetry Event
    • posters, bookmarks, buttons, diversity coffee mugs
    • participation in student events; i.e., First Look Fair, All Niter, New Student Welcome, Homecoming, Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend, Visit Maryland Days, etc.
  • To promote greater co-sponsorship of diversity programs among campus units partica.ion in the UMCP Diversity Accountability Plan, and among employee/student organizations.
    Proposed activities include:
    • the "Diversity Matching Grants Program" for collaborative, interdisciplinary projects and curriculum development
    • posters
    • other forms of advertising
  • To assess campus climate and measure the institutionalization of diversity at UMCP by using an assortment of evolving, long-term methods.
    Proposed activities include:
    • Continue Diversity Initiative program evaluations, implemented during the last 2 years, surveying unit heads, sponsors, and program participants
    • tracking institutional data on the demographic characteristics of campus members to document changes in campus profile
    • reviewing relevant literature, research and instruments on climate and diversity
    • maintaining comparisons of UMCP on selected characteristics pertaining to diversity with those of our Peers and other AAU institutions
    • conducting random sample surveys of staff, faculty, and students about campus climate and diversity issues.

The program budget request below is submitted to achieve the above goals.

  • Recognize the diversity initiative as an on-going program and provide funding through FY '99 as projected below
  • Provide funding for support of the FY '95 program in the amount of $53,700 as detailed below
