2001
The Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education links the faculty and resources of College of Education with the Maryland State Department of Education. This joint effort fosters a unified, research-based approach to working with individual school districts to address the problem as it exists in their schools. The institute aims to create systemic reforms more likely to be adopted by individual districts, and thus more likely to make a difference on a large scale. |

2001
TheDavid C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland celebrates the legacy of David C. Driskell -- Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Art, Artist, Art Historian, Collector, and Curator -- both by preserving the rich heritage of African American visual art and culture, and by fostering the development of future artists and scholars of color. The Center provides an intellectual home for scholars, museum professionals, art administrators, and artists broadening the field of African diasporic studies. By bringing together the visual arts and the field of diasporic studies in fluid and dynamic ways, the Center offers creative and curricular programming to the University and the greater Maryland and Washington, D.C. communities while serving as a national leader in the field of African American art and culture.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Certificate Program is approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and endorsed by the University's Board of Regents in Spring 2002. The task of LGBT Studies is to highlight sexuality and sexual identities as aspects of the diversity of the University community, and to promote research and scholarship in this discipline.

Social Justice From Classroom to Community (SJCC) Workshop is established. Workshop objectives are to share insights into student values, principles, and motivation for independent social change; and to create community among students with similar interests and goals.

Intergroup Dialogue as Pedagogy Across the Curriculum (INTERACT) at OHRP. The two-year pilot project funded by Ford Foundation is a facilitated opportunity for University of Maryland, Prince George’s Community College, and Prince George’s County Public School faculty to develop knowledge, skills, and abilities in intergroup dialogue process, and its application to teaching in various disciplines.

2004
The Pre-College Programs in Undergraduate Studies is the umbrella organization for three college preparatory programs operating in the campus—the classic
Upward Bound Program, Upward Bound HOLA, and the
Upward Bound Math and Science Regional Center.
Students who participate in these programs have gone on to attend college, and many have received college scholarships. The students come from a wide range of backgrounds, and many are recent immigrants.

2004
The Center for Persian Studies (CPS) opens in its new facilities in November with the eminent Iranian literary and cultural scholar, Professor Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak, as its founding Director. Spring, 2005, will see two more: a Center for Research on SLA and Cognition (CERESLAC), and a Center for Research on Less Commonly Taught Languages (CRLTCL).
