Attendees: Sally Koblinsky; Ana Patricia Rodriguez; Jeff Milem; Bill Sedlacek; Alice Bonner; Rhonda Malone; Amy McLaughlin; Maurine Beasley; Marvin Lynn; Elaine Anderson; Marla Mcintosh; Christine Clark; Gloria Bouis; Sivagami Subbaraman Agenda: 1. Sally Koblinsky will rejoin the FRC as a "third" co-chair, joining Marvin Scott and Maurine Beasley who is "technically" on sabbatical this semester--but who is so committed to the FRC that she is still coming to the meetings! Thank you Maurine! 2. Sivagami ("Shiva") Subbaraman and Christine Clark will take on the role of co-coordinators or administrative and programmatic support to the FRC this year. Gloria Bouis, who has been in this role since the committee's inception will be transitioning out of this role so that she can take on the full-time coordination of OHRP's student-focused programming. 3. Siva and Christine provided a brief overview of OHRP's Ford Foundation funded INTERACT study on Intergroup Dialogue as Pedagogy Across the Curriculum--a collaboration between UM, PGCC, and PGCPS faculty interested in learning how intergroup dialogue may be adapted to teach regular classroom content a different academic levels and across he curriculum. 4. Building on the INTERACT Project theme, the FRC decided to focus on intergroup dialogue as pedagogy as the theme for the FRC's 2004 Faculty Research Forum (FRF). The date of April 6th has been chosen for this event. The time of the event will be set once we know when the best time is based on a review of the spring class schedule—likely, a two hour block in the afternoon. In addition to having some of the UM INTERACT Project participants talk about their work in the Project, the forum will also feature: 1) an interactive component in which attendees (we are targeting Graduate Students this year) will get the opportunity to engage in an actual intergroup dialogue; 2) a short film clip; and, 3) a presentation of broader research findings relating to the efficacy of intergroup dialogue as pedagogy. 5. We also discussed the theme for the 2004 Faculty Support Award (FSA) call. After some provocative discussion, we decided that if we are only able to offer one award this year because of budgeting that we will leave the call open to projects in all three areas--teaching, research, and service—rather than limiting it to the teaching area to dovetail with the FRF theme. However, if we are able to scare up some additional funds to offer a second award, we will dedicate one award to teaching and leave the other award open. 6. Some concerns came up around diversity across the curriculum. Christine agreed to bring those concerns to the Provost's Committee currently reviewing the diversity CORE requirement. REMINDER ON FOLLOW-UP TASKS BEFORE THE NEXT MEETING ALL FRC MEMBERS... 1) please check on the courses being offered in your department in the spring, especially graduate courses, to see which ones might coincide with the FRF--bring a list to the next FRC Meeting;
2) 3) if you have graduate student reflectors in your department/college—please find out if we can have permission to send an announcement out to it about the FRF—if we can, please find out what the address is—if we can't, please find out if you can send out an announcement to it (we will gladly draft it to save you time and energy) 4) please e-mail Siva at shivas@umd.edu about your best available days and times for next spring so that we can suggest some possible meeting dates and time for the FRC for the spring. ADDITIONALLY... Rhonda... Graciously offered to check on the graduate and undergraduate courses that are offered on the 6th so that we can target the instructors of those classes to bring their students; (Once Rhonda gets this list, Siva and Christine will cross-check each course to determine which are diversity CORE courses and which, if any, are also intergroup dialogue-based courses.) Sally... Eagerly offered to check with Spencer Benson, the new Director of CTE, to see if CTE would be interested in: 1) co-sponsoring the FRF; 2) including attendance at the FRF as a part of the Graduate Student CTE certificate; and/or 3) possibly co-sponsoring a second FSA. Siva... Agreed to check with the Libraries Diversity Committee (Tom) to: 1) confirm their continuing co-sponsorship of the FRF, including the provision of refreshments for the event; and, 2) make certain that the 6th floor Special Events Room in McKeldin is available on April 6th in the afternoon. Christine... Agreed to check with Robert Waters to see if the Provost's Office might consider co-sponsoring: 1) the FRF as a part of the Provost's Conversations on Diversity; and/or 2) a second FSA. Siva and Christine... Agreed to coordinate facilitators for the interactive component of the FRF.
