We conduct workshops for faculty, staff, and students in administrative or academic departments, university-affiliated organizations, or student groups, both on and off the University of Maryland's campus. These workshops explore the complex topics of diversity which include, but are not limited to, understanding race, ethnicity, language, geographic origin, socioeconomic class, gender, sexuality, age, religion and spirituality, the multiple components of disability, size and appearance issues, and multicultural organizational development. These facilitations are appropriate for introductory, intermediate, and/or advanced audiences. Each facilitated experience is designed to generate informative discussion and engage participants in activities about the multiple meanings of diversity that stimulate the exploration of their own and others' sense of identity, and how these identities influence institutional, professional, and personal relationships. Tailored to meet the specific needs of the participants, each workshop is modified in terms of structure and organization (information presentation, facilitated dialogue, interactive activities, combination), and length (from one hour). We call upon the expertise of facilitators from across campus and beyond. We have partnered with units such as the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the Department of Family Studies, and the Office of Multiethnic Student Education (OMSE). Additionally, workshops have been conducted everywhere from the Home and Garden Center, College of Journalism, Engineering, and the Department of Athletics, to Residential Life, Greek Life, McKeldin Library, and the Office of Information Technology.
